AFTERNOON IN MOSCOW

Sasha Boldachev
World famous Russian Concert Harpist

Sunday 29 December 15:00

Salvi Artist
accompanied by the Kalinka String Quintet

A fascinating story surrounds the engagement of this world famous Russian Concert Harpist at Brooklyn Theatre. Artistic Director, Willem Vogel encountered a splendid rendition of Chopin’s Fantasy Impromptu on Facebook. This work was performed on the harp, by Sasha Boldachev. Willem was totally intrigued by the fact that such a chromatic, virtuoso piano work could be so seemlessly executed on the harp. He sent the video clip to SA harpist, Amarillie Ackermann, to confirm that this would be an almost impossible work to perform on an instrument like the harp. Amarillie totally agreed that she was flabbergasted and could not quite explain the intricate pedalling that such a piece would involve.

Willem wrote to Sasha to express his awe at this feat and got chatting to the famous artist. An innocent question followed: “Would you ever be interested to perform at Brooklyn Theatre” followed by an enthusiastic ‘Yes!” from Sasha. There and then a deal was struck and concerts arranged in Brooklyn Theatre as well as Stellenbosch.

The famous New Year’s eve Concerts at Brooklyn Theatre are now a nine year old tradition, with many of these concerts totally sold out along the way. Nothing could be more exciting to welcome in the New Year, than some brilliant music making on the harp, as solo instrument, accompanied by a String Quintet.

Thus far, the concerts presented on New Year’s Eve, have only enjoyed a single performance on the actual night. This year, patrons who are not comfortable with night driving on New Year’s Eve, can choose to enjoy a second performance of this concert on Sunday afternoon 29 December.

The youthful Boldachev is a classical harpist in the true sense of the word and his performances of the great harp concerti and other solo works for this instrument are legendary. He is also a fine arranger and even does photographic modelling, because of his striking looks.

For the programme - Midnight in Moscow - patrons can expect an elegant compilation of works by Russian composers like Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. In addition the French concerto for harp and strings by Damase will be featured as well as arrangements of popular pieces by David Bowie, Queen, Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers as well as some Russian Folk songs.

Alexander Boldachev was born in St. Petersburg in 1990. From an early age, having mastered the piano and the harp, at the age of five years, Alexander began his concert activity and at the same time, he wrote his first work as a composer. In 1996, he became a member of the Children’s Christmas Festival, performing a specially written for him work by Sergei Slonimsky.

Since 1997, he is a student of the Lyceum at the St.Petersburg Conservatory by the class of Harp (Karina Maleeva) and by the class ofcomposition (Svetlana Lavrova). At the age of nine, Alexander starts his international career with a concert with the State Orchestra of Lithuania. During the following years, he became the winner of many international competitions for harp and composition, participated in festivals and international harp congresses and conducted concert activity. Awarded by the prize “British brilliant talent”, “Pro Europa” (“For outstanding talent and contribution to the European art”), and a holder of a fellowship of the Bank “Vontobel” in Switzerland and of the”Banque Populaire” in France.

In 2005, he entered the Graduate School of ArtsZurich (Switzerland), where he received the training from the Bachelor to the graduate student, by the class of Harp (Catherine Michel, Sarah O’Brien), of composition (Mathias Steinauer) and of conducting (Mark Kissoczy).

Today, he is being busy with the concert schedule and giving masterclasses in Russia, Europe, Asia, South and North America, complementing his harp repertoire with his own works and transcriptions for harp. From June 2016, he became an exclusive Artist for SalviHarps.
